 - Sara Rae Perman

Rabbi Sara Rae Perman is presently serving as the Rabbi of Congregation Emanu-El Israel in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. She accepted the pulpit in mid-July, 1986. Rabbi Perman is also serving as the Jewish chaplain at the State Correctional Institute at Greensburg. During her time in this area, Rabbi Perman has been chair of the Greensburg Ministerium and chair of the Greater Pittsburgh Rabbinic Association. Rabbi Perman has also been President of the Great Lakes Ohio Valley Association of Reform Rabbis. Since 1995, Rabbi Perman has been teaching educators for the Agency for Jewish Learning previously the Jewish Education Institute in Pittsburgh. Currently Rabbi Perman is on the Board of Directors of the Blackburn Center of Greensburg (previously the Center Against Domestic and Sexual Violence) and serves as vice chair of the National Advisory Board of Seton Hill University’s National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education. Previously, Rabbi Perman served as assistant Rabbi to Har Sinai Congregation in Baltimore, Maryland from 1983-1986 and as assistant Rabbi at Temple Beth El in Spring Valley, New York from 1981-1983. During both of her assistantships, she was deeply involved with youth work groups and served as Rabbinic Advisor to MAFTY (Mid-Atlantic Federation of Temple Youth) and as Rabbinic Dean to CNYFTY (Central New York Federation of Temple Youth). Before going to Spring Valley, Rabbi Perman was the Rabbinic Intern for two years at Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C. While a rabbinic student at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion (H.U.C.-J.I.R.) in New York, she was an outreach worker to Reform Jewish students at the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation of Rutgers University. Rabbi Perman also served as a Jewish Chaplain at Memorial Hospital, Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. A 1973 graduate of Goucher College, Rabbi Perman did graduate work at SUNY at Buffalo and was ordained by (H.U.C.-J.I.R.) in May, 1981. She received an Honorary Doctorate from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in May 2006 for “25 years of distinguished service to the Jewish people”. She is married to Attorney James B. Gefsky and they have one son.
